In case you need any convincing that the U.K. phone-hacking mess has all the elements of some seedy soap opera or film noir, there's this: Sean Hoare, the former News of the World reporter who has repeatedly blown the whistle on some of the now-shuttered tabloid's past misdeeds, is dead.
"At 10.40am today [Monday 18 July] police were called to Langley Road, Watford, following the concerns for welfare of a man who lives at an address on the street. Upon police and ambulance arrival at a property, the body of a man was found. The man was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after," British police told The Guardian in a statement. "The death is currently being treated as unexplained, but not thought to be suspicious. Police investigations into this incident are ongoing."
It is perhaps worth noting that Hoare had a history of drug and alcohol problems. But the timing of his death is undeniably eerie--he had dished to the New York Times about alleged journalistic infractions at News of the World as recently as last week.

ESCANDALO DE ESCUCHAS ILEGALES: Rebekah Brooks, ex directora general del grupo News International quedó detenida hoy
"Rebekah tenía un cita previa con la policía a la que acudió por su propia voluntad. Fue detenida cuando llegó (a la comisaría)", confirmó el portavoz de Brooks, David Wilson.
Poco antes de la confirmación por parte del entorno de Brooks, Scotland Yard había dado a conocer un comunicado en el que informaba que una mujer –sin revelar su identidad- había sido detenida bajo las acusaciones de escuchas ilegales de comunicaciones y corrupción.
Brooks había renunciado el viernes como directora del grupo News International, la rama británica del imperio de Murdoch. La creciente presión política la obligó a dejar su cargo.
La “número 2” de Murdoch está acusada de "presunta conspiración para interceptar comunicaciones" y "presunta corrupción".
Con su detención, ya son diez los detenidos en el marco de la investigación abierta en enero en relación con el escándalo de escuchas telefónicas practicadas por el diario News of the World, perteneciente al grupo News Corp de Murdoch.
El domingo pasado, en un intento de frenar el escándalo, Murdoch cerró el diario News of the World. Pero no consiguió frenar la gigantesca bola de nieve en que se convirtió la causa. Tanto es así que en el caso hasta quedó indirectamente implicado el jefe del gobierno conservador británico, David Cameron, cuyo ex director de comunicaciones Andy Coulson, fue antes editor de News of the World.
